A Step-by-Step Guide for Our Reading Activity
Tune-in Activity: Phonics Song & Puppet Play
Materials Needed:
-
Cutout of lion from "How to Hide a Lion" (Click here to print)
-
Context card (Click here to print)
-
Chopstick/ice-cream stick
-
Tape
-
Device with access to YouTube (Play Alphabet Phonics Song)
Instructions
-
Play the "Alphabet Phonics Song" on an electronic device to get children to recap various letter sounds.
-
Bring out the lion puppet and get child to recall where the lion is from (i.e. it's the lion from the storybook "How to Hide a Lion").
-
Upon accurate identification, role-play with the puppet to set the context of the reading activity, "The lion says that he is hungry, and he wants to eat something. However, he can only eat food that starts with the /_/ sound."
-
Bring out the context card and fill in the blanks with the beginning letter sound that you want to focus on for the session (e.g. /s/ sound).
-
Demonstrate the identified letter sound to children by elongating the beginning sound (e.g. ssssssnake).
-
Proceed to the main activity.
Main Activity: Feed the Lion
Materials Needed:

Instructions
-
Bring out the box with lion cutout, as well as the set of word & picture cards
-
Lay out the set of cards on the table and place the box in front of child
-
Facilitate child in picking out cards that begin with the identified letter sounds from earlier. For example, with the aid of the pictures on the cards, get child to elongate the beginning sounds of each word (e.g. mmmillk).
-
Prompt child's thinking by getting him or her to recall the accurate letter sound, "Do you think that the lion will drink the /m/ilk?".
-
After child has accurately picked out the cards with the corresponding beginning sounds, get them to insert the cards into the "lion's mouth".
-
Repeat process until all cards with the corresponding sounds have been picked out.
Note: You can repeat the activity by changing the focused beginning sound. Click here to access more word & picture cards of different letter sounds.
Closure Activity: Sorting Letter Sounds
Instructions
-
To reinforce child's learning, identify a letter sound and get child to name some objects that have the corresponding letter sounds (e.g. /l/ for lion, ladder, lemon)
-
Facilitate clean-up session by getting child to pick up the word cards from earlier and sorting them according to the same beginning sounds (i.e. stack word cards with the same beginning sounds together).
