Interactive Reading Activities

Dear Parents,


We have compiled 6 useful reading resources that you can carry out with your child, as well as educational websites that you can use to support and enhance your child’s literacy learning. Please feel free to browse through these resources and try them out with your child!


We hope that you and your child will enjoy engaging in these activities!



I Spy Beginning Sounds (3- to 4-years old)


This activity gives your child the opportunity to practice identifying the beginning sounds of words. This will help your child in reading when he/she decodes words in the text to read the words.



Activity steps:

1. Click on the picture of the activity above or the link below to access the Fun Early Learning website to download and print the activity sheets for your child.

2. Invite your child to use any colouring materials such as crayons or colour pencils to colour the items that begin with the letter sounds stated in the activity sheets.


You can find the instructions for the activity on the Fun Early Learning website. You can facilitate the activity for your child by telling him/her the names of the things on the activity sheets if he/she is unsure of the names before asking him/her if the names begin with the stated letter sounds.


Beginning Sounds Bingo (4-to 5-year-olds)

This activity gives your child the opportunity to practice identifying the beginning sounds of words. This will help your child in reading when he or she decodes words in the text to read the words.



Activity steps:

1. Click on the picture of the activity above or the link below to access the Growing Book by Book website to download and print the bingo sheets for your child.

2. Provide your child with erasers, toy figurines, or buttons.

3. Call out a letter sound.

4. Invite your child to find items in the bingo sheets that begin with the letter sound.

5. Get your child to use the items to cover the items that begin with the letter sound.

6. If your child covered 5 items horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, he/she can call out ‘Bingo!’


You can find the instructions for the activity on the Growing Book by Book website. You can facilitate the activity for your child by telling him/her the names of the things on the bingo sheets before asking him/her if the names begin with the letter sounds that you called.


Beginning Sounds Stomp (4- to 5-year-olds)

This activity gives your child the opportunity to practice identifying the beginning sounds of words. This will help your child in reading when he or she decodes words in the text to read the words.



Activity steps:

1. Write the letters A to Z on a piece of paper each and secure them to the floor using duct or scotch tape.

2. Place a ball of play dough on each piece of paper.

3. Prepare picture cards of objects that start with letter sounds A to Z (e.g., A is apple, B is ball) and put them in a bag.

4. During the activity, invite your child to pull out a picture card from the bag and say the name of the object on the card.

5. Invite them to identify the beginning sound of the object before stomping the ball of play dough on the floor.

If your child has difficulty identifying the names of the pictures, you can facilitate the activity for your child by telling him/her the names of the things on the picture cards before asking him/her to identify the beginning sounds of these names.


Rhyming Clip Cards (4- to 6-year-olds)

This activity gives your child the opportunity to practice identifying rhyming words. This will help your child in reading as it helps them to be aware of rhyming patterns in words as they read.



Activity steps:

1. Click on the picture of the activity above or the link below to access the Fun Early Learning website to download, print, and prepare the rhyming cards for your child.

2. Invite your child to read the word on the top of each card before identifying the word at the bottom of the cards that rhymes with the word at the top of the cards.

3. Your child will use pegs to clip the rhyming word.


You can find the instructions for the activity on the Fun Early Learning website. You can facilitate the activity for your child by reading the words with your child if he/she is unsure of how to read them, or you can break the words into their letter sounds before encouraging your child to blend the letter sounds to read the words.


Sunshine Sight Words Memory Game (5- to 6-year-olds)

This activity gives your child the opportunity to practice reading sight words. This will help your child in reading as it helps them to be able to read more fluently as sight words are words that commonly appear in texts.



Activity steps:

1. Click on the picture of the activity above or the link below to access the Primary Playground website to download, print, and prepare sight word cards for your child.

2. Mix the cards up and place the side of the cards with the sight words facing down on a flat surface (e.g., table).

3. Your child will flip one card over and read the sight word on the card before flipping another card to find the matching sight word card.

4. If the card does not match, your child will flip both cards again.

5. At any time, only 2 cards can be flipped open.

6. If both word cards match, your child can leave the cards facing up.

7. Repeat until all cards are facing up.
